Felted wool ornaments

These ornaments were made from felted balls that were leftover from last years felted ball ornaments. This year I cut out wool felt shapes and sewed them on with embroidery floss.

These have turned into the best portable project. Everything I need fits in a couple baggies. Yesterday, while at my kids teen gathering at the local coffeehouse I stitched three of these. I made one while sitting at a doctors appointment and a few more watching tv with the family. The wool is wonderful to stitch through.

  1. Can I ask you how you embroider on them? Just a regular embroidery needle? I'm having a hard time picturing how it works, but I love the idea!

  2. I like to use a crewel needle because the eye is a little larger and I tend use use all 6 floss strands together when I stitch the ornaments. I wrote an article about making these for Quilting Arts gifts 2007, but really all you need to do is thread your needle, tie a knot in the end and put your first stitch under one of the wool felt pieces to hide your knot. When you finish stitching make a knot close to the ball and then put your needle through the ball and give it a little tug, to pull the knot below the surface and into the ball.
